Tattoos have been around for as
long as at least 5,000 years. This makes the history
of tattoos a long one! Almost
every ancient culture has references to tattoos.
Even the world famous ötzi the ice man’,
found high in the Alps between Austria and Italy
had ink – over 57 tats!
Tattooing has been practiced worldwide. The indigenous people
of Japan, the Ainu, wore facial tattoos. It was widespread
among Polynesian peoples, and among certain tribal groups
in the Philippines, Borneo, Africa, North America, South America,
Mesoamerica, Europe, Japan, Cambodia and China.
The word tattoo itself is a great
history and much has been made of its etymology
(see Tattoo
Etymology). One school of thought has it that
the word originates from the Polynesian tatau.
Others say it came from the Dutch, tap-toe. The
current word, tattoo, is one of the most commonly
misspelled words of the English language. Popular
misspellings include tatoo, tattoo, and tato.
